The Art of Being in 'Flow'
The concept of being in a state of 'flow' is something which each and everyone one of us will experience at some point in our lives. The theory of 'flow' was coined and developed by researcher Mihaly Csikszentmihaly who defines 'flow' as:
“A state in which people are so involved in an activity that nothing else seems to matter; the experience is so enjoyable that people will continue to do it even at great cost, for the sheer sake of doing it.”(Flow: The psychology of optimal experience’,2008).
It has been proven that being in regular states of flow contributes immensely to our overall sense of wellbeing. When you engage in 'flow' activities, you feel a sense of timelessness in which all thoughts seem to melt away, bringing you truly into the present moment. On a personal level I experience the deepest sense of flow when immersed in making art or music.
Carving out time for your particular 'flow' activities is a crucial part of self-care practice which in turn fosters self-esteem and increades levels of self-worth. I challenge you to brainstorm what are the activities which bring you into your state of flow? How can you make more time and space to bring more of these 'flow' moments into your life?
